April's Book: Libertie
Wednesday, April 26, 4:00 p.m.
In April we will be reading and discussing Libertie by Kaitlyn Greenidge. Join us for tea, treats, and book talk!
Coming of age as a free-born Black girl in Reconstruction-era Brooklyn, Libertie Sampson is all too aware that her mother, a physician, has a vision for their future together: Libertie will go to medical school and practice alongside her. But Libertie feels stifled by her mother's choices and is constantly reminded that, unlike her mother, Libertie has skin that is too dark. When a young man from Haiti proposes to Libertie and promises she will be his equal on the island, she accepts, only to discover that she is still subordinate to him and all men. As she tries to parse what freedom actually means for a Black woman, Libertie struggles with where she might find it-for herself and for generations to come.

May's Book: Born a Crime: stories from a South African childhood
Wednesday, May 31, 4:00 p.m.
In May we will be reading and discussing the memoir Born a Crime: stories from a South African childhood by Trevor Noah. Born a Crime was the Salem Reads selection at Salem Public Library in February 2023. Art inspired by the memoir will be on display during the month of May as well.
Trevor Noah, host of The Daily Show, shares his remarkable story of growing up in South Africa, with a black South African mother and a white European father at a time when it was against the law for a mixed-race child like him to exist. In a country where racism barred blacks from social, educational, and economic opportunity, Trevor surmounted staggering obstacles and created a promising future for himself, thanks to his mother's unwavering love and indomitable will.
